Culture appreciation or just straight up appropriation? “Keeping up with the Kardashians” star Kylie Jenner, was recently slammed for wearing a “Yaki” ponytail (kankelon hair) at the New York Fashion week show.
Jenner attended the show with her on again/off again boyfriend, 26-year-old rapper“Tyga.”
The 18-year-old beauty could not escape the critics who are, once again, accusing her of cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation is the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture.
Social media went in on the reality star about what’s real…and what is fake!
“I know Kylie Jenner does not have a Kanekalon pony tail? I quit. We can’t have nothing.” Twitter user RetcHy Ci ?@CiaraXCiara said.
It did not stop there, another user accused Jenner of trying to be African American.
“I know she don’t got a yaki ponytail. You’re not black,“ Twitter user @fashionxaliyah said.
This is not the first time Jenner is accused of trying to imitate being a black female by accentuating black features from plumped lips, to a video capturing her wrapping her synthetic weaves, wearing “kinky” hair and braids.
Jenner was blasted last year by “Hunger Games” actress Amandla Stenberg for rocking braids, and her most popular photo to date was a controversial fashion shoot where the star had “deeply tanned” skin that reminded people of “Black Face.”
And no one can forget when she graced the cover of Teen Vogue magazine last April in dreadlocks.
Either Kylie has a strong influence of black culture surrounding her or she just has a natural knack for anything related to being black.
Is she showing a genuine interest in “Black” beauty or is this a clear case cultural appropriation?
