Former American Idol contestant and plus size model Joanne Borgella has died after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 32. Her family announced on her Facebook page that the multi-talented singer lost her yearlong battle with Endometrial Cancer Saturday.
“To God be the glory! With heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Joanne. On Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 5:45AM, Joanne Borgella Ramirez was called by the Lord to heaven. At an early age, Joanne made a choice to serve and trust the Lord; and since her diagnosis over a year ago, Joanne made a choice to also be a fighter and share her journey with the world. Her faith, courage and strength were unshaken throughout every obstacle she encountered. Although our family is suffering with this great loss, we find comfort in the closeness Joanne shared with the Lord. We know her spirit still shines and will continue to live on in heaven,” the post read.
Borgella was a Haitian beauty from New York who gained notoriety when she made it among the top 24 contestants for American Idol’s seventh season. She was also a contestant on “Mo’Nique’s Fat Chance,” profiling plus-size models. The beauty went on to make national brand connections, modeling for Macy’s, Ashley Stewart and Nordstroms.
Borgella bravely shared her battle publicly with fans, chronicling her journey on her Facebook page.
She sang with her mother on one of the videos. To hear her sent chills sends up the spine.
