From Michel’le’s “Surrving Compton,” which aired on Lifetime to, most recently, the three-part New Edition Movie which set records for BET, music artists from the 90’s are having their stories depicted on television while they are still alive.
Now, the ladies of the 90’s girl group Xscape will be bringing to life the story about their rise to fame, including the struggles they had to go through to keep the group together, and the ultimate decision to split . The women have now teamed up with the “Queen” of the Love & Hip Hop franchise, Mona Scott-Young, and Monami Entertainment for an authorized film featuring the group’s original members: Kandi Burruss-Tucker, Tameka “Tiny” Harris and sisters, LaTocha and Tamika Scott.
According to Deadline, TV One recently announced an unauthorized biopic premiering in the fall, which Xscape has called “disrespectful and disappointing.” Deadline reported the possibility of the group also filming a docu-series about their reunion.
“We are excited to join forces with Mona Scott-Young and Monami Entertainment to bring the real Xscape story to the world,” the group said in a statement. “This partnership will allow us to tell our story about our lives the way we lived it. It’s our truth about the rise, the fall and the return of Xscape. We feel the recent announcement of an unauthorized biopic on our lives is disrespectful and disappointing. We are not, in any way, participating in that project and it will never ‘represent’ our true story.”
Xscape had three consecutive platinum albums, along with six top 10 hit songs, including “Just Kicking It,” “My Little Secret” and “The Arms of the One Who Loves You.” What’s your favorite Xscape song? And… will you be tuning in?
