Insecure fans celebrate as our girl Issa Rae gets a well-deserved Golden Globe nomination! Issa, the creator of Youtube series Awkward Black Girl, has turned HBO upside down in a major way while taking viewers on a journey in the day-in-the-life of a black woman just trying to get it right and find her way in a weird, confusing and frustrating world. The self-proclaimed “Awkward Black Girl” was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical Series for the hit series.

To add to the excitement, Insecure has been granted a second season on HBO, making us so excited and even more anxious to see the outcome of the relationship with her boyfriend Lawrence (or should I say ex-boyfriend). We can all identify with someone or something in this show. From rewarding and sometimes shaky friendships to frustrating relationships to even being the oddball at your job, many of us have been in enough situations to understand some of the memorable characters’ painful experiences while trying to get through life at 20-something years old.

Although Issa loves the popularity of her new show, she still considers herself to be just a regular girl. In an interview for NY Magazine, she stated that “When I first saw my face on a billboard I pulled over and took pictures and did dances, but really, I’m always working on what’s next. I’m 31 now so I kind of know myself and have a group of friends that I love that are outside of the industry, and I just feel like this is still a job at the end of the day. It doesn’t define me.”

When it came to her love for acting that she started taking more serious in high school, she revealed that “I had a really great drama teacher who was super encouraging. Then I stopped taking it seriously in college. But when I finally got behind the scenes in terms of directing, producing, and writing I realized what it could be for me.” We are glad that she didn’t stop, because she gave us one of our favorite shows ever! Congrats, Issa, and thanks for shedding a dope spotlight on the modern black woman!!!
