HOUSTON – Mongoose versus Cobra, a neighborhood bar located in the heart of Midtown, is joining forces with the multidisciplinary artist, jazz historian and host of KPFT’s Houston Jazz Spotlight radio show, Tierney Malone, to present a monthly jazz night called Houston Jazz Spotlight Live. On May 1, the salon-style evening, filled with an eclectic fusion of rare records, live jazz performances, interviews, poetry, art and dance, will be recorded live for later broadcast on Houston Jazz Spotlight and a new podcast series Malone is launching in August 2017.

“This event is the vision of and created by Tierney himself,” said Ian Rosenberg, co-founder of Mongoose versus Cobra. “We are thrilled to partner with those in our community to celebrate the history and culture of Houston. The sound of jazz vibrating off the walls of our century-old building is a unique experience that we are excited to bring to the neighborhood.”

Malone adds, “You can’t talk about Jazz in America without talking about the great state of Texas and you definitely can’t talk about Jazz in America without talking about Houston.”

The Houston Jazz Spotlight Live series will bring together Houston’s jazz scene, past and present, that has shaped the city to become what Malone believes is the Jazz Capital of Texas. With Malone’s background and knowledge of jazz, including his role as the Minister of Information for The Jazz Church of Houston, the evening will be educational and inspirational for jazz enthusiasts as well as local Houstonians exploring the jazz scene for the first time.

The Houston Jazz Spotlight Live will take place on the first Monday of the month, with the first event on May 1 from 7-10 p.m. Featured performers and notable acts kicking off the series include:

  • Kool B – Poet
  • Juan Flores – Host of Jazz Latino (KPFT)
  • David McGee – Visual Artist
  • Robert Hodge – Visual Artist
  • Horace Grigsby – Master Crooner
  • Chris Becker – Writer
  • A.Madvyln & Grey Wolf – DJ/Musician
  • Special Guest: Chase Jordan – Vibraphonist
