Rap beefs used to consist of rappers going toe to toe in either diss records or dance battles (if you grew up in the 80’s then this all makes sense). As of recently though, music stars who are engaged in beef are taking to social media, and viewers are tuning in like a pay-per-view fight!
The most recent and unusual beef is between R&B superstar Chris Brown and rapper Soulja Boy (born DeAndre Cortez Way). According to TMZ, the two entertainers engaged in an Instagram feud after Soulja Boy liked a picture of Brown’s ex-girlfriend, Karrueche Tran. Brown seeing this became upset and allegedly threatened Soulja Boy via Facetime. Not a stranger to beef of any sort, Soulja Boy took to Twitter to call out Brown late Monday night (Jan. 2). This kicked off the first hilarious celebrity beef of 2017!
Posts have been made back and forth on Brown (@chrisbrownofficial) and Soulja Boy’s (@souljaboy) personal Instagram accounts both shading each other and attempting to “take it to the streets.” Fans and a few entertainers caught wind of this, and everyone had their versions of the supposed “beef,” further dividing the wedge.
But early Wednesday morning, Soulja Boy decided to call off the beef because of an important matter in his life– his mother’s illness. He received a call about his mom being hospitalized, and considered it to be a wake up call.
Soulja Boy apologized to others that he has feuded with within the last few days before the new year, including Lil Yachty, Quavo, and Chris Brown, among the few. According to HotNewHipHop.com, he even suggested squashing the beef and that he and Brown make music together. While this apology seems genuine, others feel Soulja has been using social media as a means for attention, or to help his waning rap career.
Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, is dismissing the apology and filing a defamation lawsuit against Soulja Boy for making rude remarks addressing Brown and his daughter, Royalty.
“Rap beef”– or whatever you want to call it these days, will never have the momentum that it did in the midst of the East vs. West Coast rivalry. Let’s hope we will never have to witness the tragedies of that era ever again!!!
