NEW YORK—Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter IV” sold 964,000 units in its debut week for the second-best first-week sales of the year, according to a report released by Nielsen SoundScan Tuesday.
Fans went crazy when the highly anticipated “Tha Carter IV” was made available for digital download immediately after his appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards, then also rushed to scoop up the actual CD when it was released two days later.
“Tunechi” fell short of topping his own sales record. “Tha Carter III” sold just over 1 million when it was released in 2008.
This year, he was beat by Lady Gaga, whose “Born This Way” hit CD sold 1.1 million copies. Gaga’s success was largely in part to a one-day offer from Amazon.com to buy the album for 99 cents.
