HOUSTON — Everybody wants to build wealth. But what happens after you make the money? Do you know how to protect it? Grow it? And perhaps most importantly, make sure the next generation benefits from it?

Those are the kinds of conversations Black Wall St. wants Houston families and entrepreneurs to have during its second annual Legacy Weekend, a three-day gathering focused on financial empowerment, business ownership and building a legacy that lasts.

The event runs Nov. 6–8 under the theme “Protecting Your Legacy and Growing Your Wealth,” bringing together financial professionals, entrepreneurs, community leaders and families for a weekend of education, networking and celebration.

And while conversations about generational wealth often focus on making more money, organizers are also emphasizing what happens to that wealth once it has been created.

Because a Legacy Doesn’t Build Itself

Owning a business is an accomplishment. Buying property can be a milestone. Building savings is a step toward financial security.

But understanding how to protect those assets, navigate financial decisions and prepare for the future can be just as important.

That’s where Legacy Weekend organizers hope to make a difference.

The conference will feature discussions on trusts, insurance, banking relationships, real estate, financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Participants will also have opportunities to explore artificial intelligence, digital marketing and mental health.

The idea is to connect people with information and professionals who can help them better understand their options, whether they’re launching a business, growing an existing one or thinking about what they want to leave behind for their children and grandchildren.

“Legacy is more than what we leave behind. It is what we build, protect, and pass forward,” said Frank Perkins. “Legacy Weekend is designed to give our community access to the information, resources, and connections needed to create a stronger financial future for generations to come.”

Black Economic Excellence Takes Center Stage

The name Black Wall St. carries historical significance.

The original Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, became a symbol of Black entrepreneurship and economic achievement before the thriving Greenwood District was devastated during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

More than a century later, the name continues to evoke conversations about Black business ownership, economic opportunity and the importance of preserving what communities build.

Houston’s Legacy Weekend draws on that broader spirit of economic empowerment, with programming designed to encourage financial education and connections among business owners and residents.

Scheduled speakers include Gene Boykin Jr., Dr. Velma Trayham and Benaisha Pooe-Lewis.

The weekend will also feature panel discussions, a vendor marketplace, business booths, networking opportunities and an awards ceremony recognizing community leaders.

For entrepreneurs, the gathering offers opportunities to meet other business owners, showcase products and services and explore professional relationships.

For families, the emphasis is on learning more about financial tools that may help them plan for the future.

It’s Not All Business. There’s Room for Community, Too.

Legacy Weekend kicks off Friday, Nov. 6, with a mixer powered by the Black Houston Creative Network at PLUME in Houston’s Heights area.

The main conference takes place Saturday, Nov. 7, at Red Oak Ballroom, followed by an official after-party that evening at The Quad.

On Sunday, Nov. 8, the focus shifts to families and community with the Black Wall St. Veteran & Family Field Day at Emancipation Park.

The free outdoor celebration will feature entertainment, family-friendly activities and opportunities for residents to gather and recognize veterans.

It’s a fitting conclusion to a weekend centered on legacy, because financial success is only one part of the conversation. Community relationships, shared knowledge and opportunities for future generations also play a role.

And perhaps that’s the bigger takeaway from the weekend’s message: Building wealth may start with individual decisions, but preserving opportunity for the next generation requires planning, knowledge and intention.
