The Spring Independent School District announced Monday a new partnership with Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) that will allow PVAMU to provide early admission and related services to the top 25 percent of ranked Spring ISD students at the end of their junior year.
An audience of Spring ISD juniors and seniors met in the Philip K. Geiger Performing Arts Center at Westfield High School to hear details about the partnership, learn about PVAMU programs at a mini fair and watch as Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Rodney Watson and PVAMU President Dr. George Wright signed an agreement making the partnership announcement official.
“This partnership is a true testament that our community – and Prairie View is very much part of our community – is working with us to provide opportunities for students who may have not thought that they had the opportunity to go to a four-year institution,” said Superintendent Dr. Rodney Watson.
The partnership is focused on automatic admission for select groups of students and scholarship dollars that are earmarked for Spring ISD students who will attend Prairie View A&M University.
“Many students think that college is not within their reach either due to finances or because they think they won’t be accepted by a college or university. This partnership makes it possible for our students – if they apply themselves and do what is necessary – to not only go to college, but get accepted early and receive scholarships as well,” Watson said.
The top 25 percent from every high school is automatically admitted to the university – they simply need to fill out an application. PVAMU is providing the district with a total of 15 scholarships valued at $500 each for students who decide to attend the university, three for each of the five high schools. Additionally, the university is working on scheduling preview days and events especially for Spring ISD students, including financial aid and admissions workshops for students and their families.
Prairie View A&M President Dr. George Wright spoke to the students about the opportunities that will be available to them and invited them to visit the campus to see the possibilities for themselves.
“I would stress, since Spring is not far away, everybody should come out to Prairie View and just visit and look around. Prairie View is a public university, and we are committed to all students. We are open to all students, and there is a place for you at Prairie View,” Wright said.
