You know they say that if you do the crime, do the time…and unfortunately, the crimes committed against inmates by other inmates can be downright brutal.
And thanks to social media, we no longer have to wait for an episode of MSNBC’s “Lockup: Raw” to see for ourselves.
A photo surfaced on Facebook showing an inmate, identified by his family members as Cortez Berry, on his knees with a belt or rope of some sort around his neck, with two more inmates standing over him. Berry appears to be beaten up, with a swollen eye and other visible bruises.
Berry has been at the Al Burruss Correctional Training Center in Forsyth, Ga. since March 2014. He is serving an 8-year sentence for robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and aggravated assault.
According to reports, Berry told his sister during a visit that he was jumped in his cell by 10 inmates. He said the other inmates took his belongings, beat him, then made him pose for the picture.
The family wants answers..and another thing comes into question… they have cellphones and Facebook in jail? Yep, that is a great way to “reform” them!
The Department of Corrections tells News 12: The Department is fully aware and this incident is currently under investigation. The Department does not allow inmates to have access to cellphones, as possession of such contraband is deemed illegal. Introduction of cellphones into our facilities is a nationwide issue the Corrections system is facing. The Department continuously works to utilize extensive resources to combat this issue. We take very seriously our mission of protecting the public and running safe and secure facilities.
