HOUSTON—Standing Room Only will stage NEXT TO NORMAL, the award-winning and ground-breaking Broadway rock musical, January 23 through February 15, 2014 at Obsidian Art Space. Featuring a thrilling score by Tom Kitt and a powerhouse book by Brian Yorkey, NEXT TO NORMAL shares one family’s struggles with mental illness.
NEXT TO NORMAL follows the trials of a common suburban family: Dan Goodman, his wife, Diana and their two children, Natalie and Gabe. Diana has struggled for years with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and depression stemming from a trauma almost 16 years before. As Diana’s demons start to encroach into the everyday lives of the family members, each must find a way to get by, to grieve, to accept and forgive. This contemporary musical, winner of multiple Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize, addresses such issues as grieving a loss, ethics in modern psychiatry and suburban life. With provocative lyrics and a thrilling score, NEXT TO NORMAL shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family’s world intact.
Performance dates are January 23, 24, 25, 31 and February 1, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 at 8 p.m. with matinees on Saturday, February 1 and Sunday, February 9 at 2 p.m. Performances are at Obsidian Art Space, located at 3522 White Oak in the heart of the Heights and the White Oak dining and entertainment district.
