Nineteen-year-old Juwan Plummer is facing up to 20 years in prison for what he and his father say was an accidental shooting. Plummer has seven charges against him, including intentional discharge of a firearm, which caused serious injuries to two Detroit police officers that Plummer believed were intruders trying to break into his home.

Plummer’s father, Vincent Redd, said that his son was still shaken up from a previous attempted break-in, and he was unaware that the cops were called out to investigate suspicious activity in the neighborhood. “They’d been looking at this house and that house,” Redd said. “He was in the basement and he heard a noise on the side of the house coming towards the front.” That’s when Plummer was prompted to fire a single shot that he hoped would scare the intruders away.
“He never heard anyone announce themselves,” Redd said. “He just saw flashlights down by the window, and heard a noise approaching the porch.” However, prosecutors said that wasn’t the case. According to the two officers, they were in full uniform and allegedly knocked on the door to identify themselves. Reports say the shot grazed one officer in the arm while the other officer was shot in the face with two pellets, one of which was lodged in his jaw. Plummer’s family is now focused on finding him a lawyer that believes their son.
