The pavements around the country today pound to the beat
Of many a worn shoe that walk the street
Carrying the souls and bodies of those that are free
Made possible by the efforts of many and words of the decree
‘That all men are created equal’, no one is above or the below the other
All are God’s children, all sisters and brothers
Establish by His Spirit and signed in the blood
Shed by many who did the best that they could
To ensure that on some day in the future that on mountains high and in valleys low
That all would be able to reap the benefits of the seeds that they sowed
Seeds planted by King & Lewis, and Randolph, Wilkins & Young,
And watered by love and nonviolence so that all would OVERCOME
The oppression and ignorance brought about by fear
A threat to the blessing and privilege that we hold so dear
The right to be free men and women, no shackles, no chains
Free men and women, oh what a good measure we’ve gained
