Every third Friday in March is known as nationwide “Match Day,” a day when several MD hopefuls find out which hospital they will be practicing their residency. However, this past Friday, history was made as Johns Hopkins Hospital welcomed the first black female neurosurgeon Nancy Abu-Bonsrah. Nancy, is a native of Ghana, West Africa, has been in Baltimore, Maryland for the last 11 years.
“I am very much interested in providing medical care in underserved settings, specifically surgical care, I hope to be able to go back to Ghana over the course of my career to help in building sustainable surgical infrastructure,” Abu-Bonsrah said in a statement. “I will be matching into neurosurgery, a field that I am greatly enamored with, and hope to utilize those skills in advancing global surgical care.”
She will also be joining her husband at Johns Hopkins Hospital where he is studying medicine as well. Nancy will continue her residency in a 3 to 7 year medical training program. She said “I want to be remembered for serving my community, whether it is through providing quality surgical care or helping mentor the next generation of surgeons.”
