HOUSTON – The non-profit organization PicDiversity is working to give schools a touch of color and much-needed inspiration through the lenses of young people! Art students of various races and genders assembled Nov. 21 at The Denney Theater, The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) to model for a diverse photo shoot showcasing their specialties in dance, music, theater and the visual arts.

All photos taken involve the teens dancing, singing, drawing, playing instruments or acting. The photo shoot is part of non-profit PicDiversity’s “Project Inspiration” which will provide free prints to brighten school halls, and inspire elementary and junior high students to pursue their dreams no matter their race, culture, or gender.

“When I first explained the need for diverse photos in the schools to the teens modeling for us, they all nodded their heads in agreement because of their own experiences, and were so excited to help inspire younger students,” said Rachel Hanley, PicDiversity founder and president. “Visuals send powerful messages and it is critical that media used to instruct and inspire our kids reflects their demographics.”

Local Houston art photographer Amitava Sarkar of Photography Insight volunteered his time and skills to take the photos. HSPVA student Savannah Lim volunteered her time and talent to video the shoot.

About HSPVA
Founded in 1971, HSPVA was created to equip young artists with highly specialized training in preparation for the intense competition it can take to excel in conservatories and the professional arts world. HSPVA is fully accredited offering the same academic curriculum and graduation requirements as all Houston Independent School District high schools. Unlike other high schools, all academics are correlated to the arts instead of treating each as an isolated discipline. For more information, please visit www.hspva.org.
