We at Lip Service:  News with Attitude love the commander-in-chief of this country and would like to say, “Happy Birthday, Mr. President!”

President Barack Obama, this nation’s first black president, has turned 50 years old.

“By the time I wake up, I’ll have an email from AARP asking me to call President Obama and tell him to protect Medicare,” Obama joked during a fundraiser in Chicago the night before his big day.

Obama was serenaded from musicians Jennifer Hudson, Herbie Hancock and the band OK Go, along with the crowd of about 2,400 gathered at Chicago’s historic Aragon Ballroom Thursday.

After his toast at the Blue Room of the White House, the president plans to have a night-side celebration full of family and friends.    No need to worry ‘nay-sayers,’ White House officials said the Obamas will pay for the celebration out of their own pocket.  No taxpayers’ money needed.

The first family then plans to take a weekend getaway at Camp David, the president retreat in Maryland.

The joyous occasion is a little distraction away from all the congressional controversy surrounding the debt ceiling, in which a deal with the Republicans was reached just a day before.

Michelle Obama poked fun at her aging hubby and the little gray hairs he’s gotten since he was sworn in.

“I see Barack make choices he knows will affect every American family. That’s no small task for anyone—and more proof that he’s earning every last one of those gray hairs,” Mrs. Obama wrote in an e-mail to supporters.  We totally agree.

Obama was born Aug. 4, 1961, near the end of the baby boom years of 1946-64. He’s the third U.S. president who belongs to the baby boom generation, a population of more than 76 million. Bill Clinton was the first, followed by George W. Bush.
